    Buchanan!
    Holy cow!
In the late fifties I was a 90 pound weakling who lived in a fantasy world of paperback westerns (particularly Gold Medal westerns). Jonas Ward (aka Ard) was the coolist. I read those early Buchanans over and over.and In my mind, Buchanan was who I wanted to be. Many years later, as a grown man (who’se body finally matured and developed ) I remembered, and lived, the values I gleaned from those early Buchanan novels. I was never anywheres near 6 foot six (I was 5 eleven) but I was a pretty good semi pro middleweight, and a great elementary school teacher, and I never took advantage of any of the privaleges life bestowed on me (and as a post WWII American, I realized I lived in a world of priviledge that ancient potentates could only envy). I always tried to retain that quiet modesty and sense of justice and fair play that Buchanan represented to me.
I’ve lived in rural Alaska now for over a half a century (I came here from NYC in the late sixties to get away from what I perceived as a decadent and self indulgent culture in narcistic decline to find the “last gasp” of the old west. I found it, and I’ve never regretted it.
No, I’m not a literary neanderthal. I’m a Jack Kerarok “Dharma Bum.” But I believe that the true values of a culture can best be found in pop culture: comics, pulps, TV and movies. In the immortal words of Lex Luthor (the first Supoerman movie, (and I paraphrase “some can unlock the secrets of the universe from the ingredients on a gum wrapper, while others learn nothing from the great classics (or something like that.”
Anyway, as a nerdy teen who had a lot of time to read because the girls didn’t think he was cool, I spent a lot of time hanging out with Buchanan,
And it was time well spent.

Thanks for your note, Gerald. Yes, Buchanan is a great character and role model. I’m glad you found the site. I find it very interesting that I received your reply while visiting Alaska for the first time! It’s an awesome, impressive state. Thanks again for your note and your thoughts.
